Chapter 22

TUCKER

I spend most of the next day helping my father on the farm.

In the morning, I leave Dillon and Nate sleeping in my childhood bedroom, and they eventually join me outside sometime before lunch. Dad tries to put them to work, but they weren’t born and raised doing this kind of stuff every day. It takes them twice as long to complete one task, and the heat seems to hit them harder than it does me. They still try their best though.

After lunch, we find some free time to crank the four-wheelers and explore the farm. Dillon takes his own, but Nate refuses to drive himself. With Nate nestled in front of me, I show the guys down to the creek that runs through the pasture, and we rut up the mud in a glorious display, though Nate turns his head to glare at me for getting his precious white shoes even dirtier.

In the evening, we eat some more of my mom’s cooking, then play a very competitive game of Monopoly that has Georgia threatening my life halfway through. The game goes unfinished as my family has to get up early for church the next morning, so we say our goodnights after the sun dips below the horizon.

I had told them to take a few days to consider what kind of arrangement we’re going to have, and that means no sex until we can talk. So, we simply sleep in each other’s arms—well, Nate sleeps on top of us most of the night but still.

Sunday morning, my parents ask us to join them for church, but I politely decline for the fifteenth time.

With Nate happily sitting between Dillon and me, we travel to the small airport in a neighboring city about an hour away. Returning the rental truck is a hassle, but eventually, we’re aboard a plane—in first class because Nate would never be caught dead in coach—headed for home.

Our captain falls asleep within minutes, but Dillon and I stay awake, chatting with each other. The conversation is easy as it drifts through all kinds of topics from my childhood to the movie playing to the upcoming game next Sunday.

“Is it just me, or has Nate not been throwing to Kennedy as much?” He asks quietly even though Nate is dead to the world.

I shake my head. Toward the end of last season, Nate wasn’t targeting Kennedy at all. Most of the team was convinced that was why we didn’t make it far into the playoffs. This season, the pair has been hit or miss, but recently, it has been very much a miss. Nate and Kennedy’s friendship is so
